Unfiltered Chat: Don’t Start a Company, Join These Startups Instead

This conversation comes up at at least once a month when chatting with younger founders… Do I start this company, even though I haven’t been able to raise money and don’t have team ready to go, or should I shelf it for now and get a job? It’s hard, barriers to entry are arguable low and startups are the “it” thing to do right now. But the answer is simple.

Check out the chat I had with Chase and let us know if you agree/disagree. And what you think of the companies we recommended joining. Side note: I’m sure we missed a few obvious ones.

Was chatting with an early stage founder a few days ago, like super early. I basically told him starting a company sucks when your experience and network is limited, go get a job at another startup and take it all in and then get back it.

Having that said…
6:39 pm
I don’t care if you agree or disagree but what companies would you recommend?
6:39 pm
Either to get super networked or learn from
6:40 pm
I completely agree with the sentiment.
6:40 pm
I think it is valuable to mess around in college making product, pitching concepts, even doing it in one’s spare time.
6:41 pm
But invaluable to join a hyper-growth startup if doable. Something I wish I had done right out school for a few years.
6:42 pm
Some companies in Boston that I think fit that bill would be: Cyber Reason, Drift, DraftKings
6:43 pm
Agree drift and DraftKings, CyberReason is super boring but founders and Volpe are real deal.
6:44 pm
I’d go Toast, Price Intelligently, Hubspot still
6:45 pm
Haha, not into Cyber Security?
6:45 pm
Those are good ones. I think it’s smart for young people to check out the portfolios of top VCs like Accomplice, General Catalyst, Bessemer, Matrix, Bain, Spark, etc.
6:46 pm
Cargurus, Datarobot, Helpscout and Wistia
6:46 pm
Haha I got burned on a cyber security ETF so I’m jaded. In all seriousness cyber security is by far one of the most attractive and fastest growing places to be right now. Also over my head
6:48 pm
Yeah, work your way down from the money is a good place to start
6:48 pm
Alright how about this, rewind to 2007ish, give or take a few years. What company do you wish you joined?
6:49 pm
Cyber is where it is at for sure.
6:49 pm
Blockchain tech as well.
6:49 pm
Ok 2007…
6:50 pm
I mean pretty easy, Hubspot
6:50 pm
Ok Circle then too
6:50 pm
No brainer on Hubspot
6:50 pm
I wish I had some of the sprocket equity
6:50 pm
But I’d take Performable pre Hubspot acquisition. I’d take whatever Balter was working on – guy knows to make a deal.
6:51 pm
Hubspot IPO’d, put Boston back in the map. Pretty easy. If you can’t go Hubspot, what’d you go with.
6:51 pm
Yeah I’m trying to think back to the Bostinno days
6:52 pm
Who was hot?
6:52 pm
Scvngr
6:52 pm
Ya right
6:52 pm
Sick burn
6:53 pm
Wayfair, Wistia I think was early then, Boston Dynamics
6:54 pm
Ah Wayfair, great one
6:54 pm
Even though Uber is a nightmare, I would have probably joined their Boston team when Austin first came here recruiting when we worked out of MassChallenge
6:56 pm
Rapid7, AthenaHealth. I think that’s all I got off the top of my head.
6:58 pm
Yea agreed with all of those. Thank god you didn’t join Halo or whatever that other ride sharing co was that came from Europe.
7:47 pm
And man Austin Geidt, impressive lady. Rolled out all of Uber’s cities, was doing a city in Europe every 48 hours
